In the recent time, the FDA has come across many outbreaks of foodborne illness related to contaminated sprouts and their study. These outbreaks lead to some serious illness issues to many people. Study from the FDA indicates that it may be due to the use of contaminated seeds used for sprouting. As the seeds are grown in warm and humid conditions, they become prone to bacteria infection.
The FDA is always committed to avoid such incidents, so they have now released this draft guidance that will help the industry to avoid contamination of sprouts and prevent the sprout related illness. The proposed draft guidance namely “Reducing Microbial Food Safety Hazards in the Production of Seed for Sprouting” was released by the U.S. FDA. The guidance intents to make the sprout seed industry aware about agency’s serious concerns with the continuous outbreaks of foodborne illness related to the consumption of raw and lightly cooked sprouts.
The guidance provides recommendations to firms throughout the production and distribution chain of seed for sprouting. The grower, holder, conditioner, or distributor should take reasonable steps and review their current operations to prevent contamination of seeds.
