FSSAI Guidance note on dietary food use for sportspersons

A guidance note on Foods for Special Dietary uses for Sportspersons (FSDUS) has been issued by the FSSAI. It is applicable to the sports fraternity, manufacturers, importers, retailers and general public.

Foods for Special Dietary Uses (FSDU) is covered in the Food, Safety and Standards Regulations, 2016. It contains eight food types, namely health supplements, nutraceuticals, food for special dietary uses, foods for special medical purposes, specialty foods containing plants or botanicals, foods containing probiotics, foods containing prebiotics and novel foods.

The regulations state the essential requirements for the composition, claims and labelling for such foods.

The FBOs manufacturing facility for such foods needs to be registered with the FSSAI and must be periodically audited. Labels should contain all the required information like “For sportspersons only”, “For oral consumption only”. The authentication of the manufactured product is necessary. Sellers/distributors should also be authenticated by the manufacturer. Complete visibility of the entire supply chain should also be provided by the manufacturer. Manufacturing date and expiry date should be marked on the label.

FSDU for sportspersons should not contain any banned substance as per WADA and regular testing should be done for this.
