Heart device approved by NICE

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) of UK, recommends the use of Jotecs E-vita open plus device for the treatment of complex aneurysm and dissections of thoracic aorta in selected population. This recommendation was presented in a guidance released on 18th December 2013. The device can be used in selected people who may have extensive disease or damage affecting their aorta.
The device, E-vita open plus, is a gradt prosthesis, which is modified and designed in a particular manner to provide one-stage repair in complex aortic disease through median sternotomy. As the device has two sections joined together, it makes it possible to treat two areas of damaged aorta in the single procedure.
Such cases would normally require a two stage procedure; however, this device can serve a boon for these procedures and eliminate the second procedure by facilitating both steps in the single procedure and making it a one-stage repair. This also helps to eliminate the health risks and those of serious complications associated with the second repair. As the second surgical repair procedure can be avoided with this device, it is essentially useful for the patients as well as NHS.
